REGIONAL ECONOMIST POSITION IN MALI

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the World Agro forestry Centre (ICRAF) are jointly recruiting an Economise to work on two now Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) projects, funded by the International fond for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The Economist will work with ICRAF and ICRISAT scientists and their national and international partners in the four countries where the two TAG projects will operate (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal).

  • Coordinate the implantation of the socio-economic component of the projects
  • Analyze markets for then on timber products
  • Facilitate the development of community-based enterprises
  • Strengthen local and regional traders’ network for marketing the non-timber products
  • Lead the projects component “identify and Test Marketing Options” in the ICRISAT TAG
  • Analysis of the commodity chain of sorghum and pearl millet
  • Identity promising marketing options for pearl millet and sorghum in the project areas
  • Test and promote small scale grain processing for urban use as business opportunities
  • Enhance farmers’ capacities for effective grain marketing
  • Strengthen inter-institutional collaboration among partner institutions and projects
  • Strengthen the capacity of partner institutions in socio-economic research.

Requirements

Specific requirements include:

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate the implantation of the socio-economic research for development components of the two projects
  • PHD in Marketing Economics
  • Experience in analyzing markets for agricultural products, and natural resource management or Agricultural Economics
  • Training and/or experience in developing community-based enterprises based on agricultural products
  • Strong bilingual of two years of professional experience in West Africa
  • Ability to value gender difference and other diversity in the workplace

Terms of offer

The contract is for a Regional Professional with an initial period of three years, subjects to a one year probation period and assessment for performance.
